Judo originated in Japan in 1882, when Professor Jigoro Kano founded it as a modern martial art based on traditional Japanese jujutsu. Kano sought to preserve the powerful grappling techniques of jujutsu while removing the more dangerous elements, creating a system that emphasized maximum efficiency and mutual respect. He called it “Judo,”meaning “the gentle way.”
Unlike many martial arts of the time, Judo was designed not just for combat—but also as a path to physical education, mental discipline, and moral development. It quickly gained popularity in Japan and around the world, becoming the first martial art to be recognized as an Olympic sport in 1964.
Today, Judo is practiced globally and is the foundation for many modern grappling systems—including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and various self-defense disciplines.
